The complexity of automotive infotainment systems has increased dramatically in the last few years. Part of the reason for this is the expectation from customers for a rich connected media experience, including easy access to all their music content on a variety of storage formats. NEC Electronics has developed the uPD35502 with one goal in mind, to enable systems supporting these advanced features, and make this possible with a minimum amount of engineering effort. This is accomplished with a device with ample performance to accomplish music decoding from multiple sources at the same time, and an optional software suite to minimize the development of new software. You will be amazed how easy it is to develop an infotainment system that connects to portable media players, USB sticks and SD cards. Your customers will be amazed as well.
With increased audio processing performance, this device is able to realize playback of multiple songs, multiple sources, and multiple destinations. This allows the flexibility to play different songs in the front and rear seat. This also allows for music to be sourced from multiple devices at one time, such as playing music from a CD at the same time a different track is being read from a USB stick or SD card.
NEC will offer an optional software suite that implements a fully functional connectivity solution. The combination of the uPD35502 and the companion software will implement needed functions such as standard software codecs for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3) Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) functions. This eliminates the need for designers to develop additional system software, greatly reducing development time. The software suite also implements a command language for creating a simple interface to the system host processor. This command interface can be implemented on various serial interfaces available on the uPD35502 such as SPI or UART. The software suite also includes a music database function for managing music connected to the device. This database supports the creation of playlists, a shuffle mode, and the option for sorting music by artist, album and genre.
The ability to adapt to changing requirements is a key feature for next generation automotive infotainment systems. One aspect of this changing environment is the need to support changes to existing compression formats and codecs, as well as support for completely formats, and the codecs. Upgrading a system based on uPD35502 is no problem, and the system designer has the flexibility to chose the source of the upgrade (USB, SD, CD ) that best fits their usage model. Changes can also be made to the music database to support new modes of operation, such as new display and search modes.
An external Bluetooth module and a Bluetooth software protocol stack can be added as a user option to enable Bluetooth communication, including hands-free use of mobile phones (HFP) , and playback of music from a handheld portable music player and transfer of music data to the rear seats (A2DP).
Integrated SD card and conventional USB interfaces enable the uPD35502 to play back music via portable music players, USB memory and SD cards. The inclusion of on-chip peripherals will lower external device count and lower cost. Multiple I2S channels offer the designer flexibility in the architecture for routing of digital music data within the system.
