Intelligent Power Device

NEC Electronics has over 20 years' experience in the development and manufacturing of intelligent power devices catering to diversifying needs for on-board installation.
As the performance of power MOSFETs improves, semiconductors are being used increasingly for a variety of automotive applications. Mechanical relays are often used for lower-amp automotive applications, mainly for economic reasons, but can be replaced with intelligent power devices to enable the building of more compact and lighter systems with improved reliability.

Save space and reduce cost with peripheral circuits integrated into a single package.

Intelligent power devices are used for automotive applications with three components: a power MOS, protection circuit and monitor output, integrated into a single package to enable the building of more compact and lighter systems with improved reliability.

Separate development for engine control and body/safety control systems accelerates development processes.

The development processes for intelligent power devices are divided broadly into two systems: the engine control system and body/safety control system, to optimize the products for the relevant needs: a need for more compact EUCs and direct mounting of EUCs on the engine for the engine control system, and for more compact and lighter units, energy savings and computerized relays for the body/safety control system.

In the engine control application, switch elements such as solenoids require embedded protection functions. NEC Electronics has unveiled a product for driving fuel injectors with the industry's highest withstand voltage of 130 volts. This product allows fine control of fuel injection into the cylinder, helping to improve fuel economy and reduce exhaust emissions.

Large current and low on-resistance products are required to replace mechanical relays for body/safety control. NEC Electronics was among the first to release MCP (multi-chip package) products in the domestic market. The 2-chip configuration consisting of a power chip and a control chip ensures both high performance and economy.

Extremely reliable even at a large current.

To improve the reliability of the system in large current applications, the load status monitoring function (e.g. open or overcurrent) is implemented, and the risk of smoke and flames is thoroughly evaluated in load short-circuit reliability tests.
